Rear-Wheel Steering on the G80 Sport, Explained

The G80 Sport does something at low speed that most sedans in its class simply cannot: it turns tighter than its wheelbase suggests it should. The reason is a small, quiet piece of engineering at the back of the car — rear-wheel steering. Here is what it does, when you feel it, and why it belongs on the short list of details worth understanding before a test drive.

What Rear-Wheel Steering Actually Does

Rear-wheel steering — Genesis refers to the system as RWS — allows the back wheels to pivot a small number of degrees in coordination with the fronts. The movement is subtle. On the G80 Sport it is measured in a handful of degrees, not the exaggerated crab-walk of a show-floor demonstration. But the effect is real, and it is one of those engineering choices that rewards a second look.

The system operates in two distinct modes, and the split is defined by vehicle speed:

  • Below roughly 37 mph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the fronts. This shortens the effective wheelbase and tightens the turning radius. Parking maneuvers, U-turns on a two-lane road, tight parking-garage ramps — the car feels smaller than it is.
  • Above that threshold, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts. The angle is smaller, almost imperceptible, but it stabilizes lane changes at highway speed and makes sweeping on-ramps feel planted.

Two behaviors, one system, and neither of them announces itself. That is the point.

Where You Notice It First

The first place most drivers register RWS is not on a canyon road. It is in a parking lot. Pull into a diagonal space at Brookhaven Village, then back out toward the lane — the car rotates through the maneuver with a sedan-and-a-half's worth of ease. It is the kind of thing you stop noticing after a week and would miss immediately in another car.

The second place is the interstate. On a merge from Robinson onto I-35 north, the G80 Sport settles into the new lane without the small mid-corner correction that longer sedans sometimes require. Nothing dramatic. Just a car that goes where you point it and stays there.

The third place is the one drivers rarely think to test: a tight cloverleaf, taken at a real-world pace. The rear axle's contribution here is almost philosophical — it makes the car feel shorter than the tape measure says.

Why Genesis Put It on the Sport

The G80 Sport is the more athletically tuned variant of the sedan. It carries the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, a firmer chassis calibration, and design details — the copper accents, the darker grille surround, the specific wheel design — that mark it as the driver's choice within the range. RWS fits that brief. It is not a gadget bolted on for a spec-sheet win; it is a component of a car engineered to be composed at speed and agile at rest.

This is consistent with how Genesis thinks about the G80 lineup as a whole. The standard G80 prioritizes a calm, long-distance ride. The Sport prioritizes response without giving up that composure. Rear-wheel steering is one of the ways the Sport threads that needle.

How It Compares Inside the Genesis Range

RWS is not unique to the G80 Sport within Genesis. The system also appears on the G90, where its low-speed benefit is even more noticeable given the longer wheelbase — a full-size sedan that parks like something a class smaller. It is a design language that runs through the brand: engineer the car to feel more natural at both ends of the speed range, then let the driver discover it on their own terms.

Buyers cross-shopping the G70 will find a different answer. The G70 is a smaller car with a shorter wheelbase; it does not need RWS to feel agile, and Genesis has not added it. Each model gets the technology that serves its purpose. That restraint is itself a design decision.

What About the SUVs?

The GV70 and GV80 approach agility through different means — suspension tuning, all-wheel-drive calibration, and in the case of the electrified variants, instantaneous torque distribution. If your shortlist includes an SUV, the conversation is a different one, and worth having in person.

What to Feel For on a Test Drive

If you are considering the G80 Sport, here is a short route that will surface what RWS actually contributes. It takes about twenty minutes.

  1. Start with a tight U-turn in a residential neighborhood. Note the turning radius. Then try the same maneuver mentally in the sedan you drive today.
  2. Find a parking lot with diagonal spaces and back out at a real angle. The rear end rotates in a way that feels natural rather than engineered.
  3. Merge onto I-35 or the Kilpatrick and change lanes deliberately at highway speed. The car should feel settled, not floaty and not nervous.
  4. Take a cloverleaf ramp at the posted advisory speed. Notice where the car's pivot point feels located. On the G80 Sport, it feels closer to the driver than the wheelbase would suggest.

None of this requires an aggressive drive. RWS is not a system that reveals itself under duress. It reveals itself in ordinary maneuvers done slightly better than expected.

The Broader Point

Rear-wheel steering is one detail among many on the G80 Sport, and in isolation it is not the reason to choose the car. The reason is the way the details compose — the chassis, the interior, the ownership experience, the coverage that comes with the car, the Service Valet program that arrives at your driveway rather than asking you to arrive at ours.
