Coolant is the least discussed fluid in an electrified car, and arguably the most important. It does not lubricate. It does not combust. It manages temperature — of the battery, the inverter, the electric motors, and in some cases the cabin — and it does so quietly, in the background, while the rest of the car gets the attention.
If you own an Electrified GV70, Electrified G80, or GV60, the coolant conversation is different from what you may remember from earlier cars. Here is what changes, and what to watch for.
Why an electrified Genesis has more coolant to think about, not less
A combustion engine has one primary cooling loop. An electrified Genesis has several. The high-voltage battery has its own thermal management circuit, calibrated to keep cells within a narrow temperature band so they charge quickly and age slowly. The power electronics — inverter, onboard charger, DC-DC converter — run on their own loop. The electric drive units are cooled as well. On some models, a heat pump borrows warmth from these systems to condition the cabin in winter, which means the coolant is also, in a sense, part of the climate control.
All of this happens without the driver noticing, which is the point. The Electrified GV70 and the Electrified G80 are engineered so that the thermal system does its work in the background. You feel the result — consistent DC fast-charging speeds, steady range in July heat, a cabin that warms in January without a dramatic drop in miles remaining — but you do not hear it.
What coolant service actually looks like
On an electrified powertrain, coolant service is less about mileage and more about condition. The fluid itself is a specific low-conductivity formulation. It is not interchangeable with the pink coolant in a combustion Genesis, and it is emphatically not interchangeable with anything sold in a gallon jug at a big-box store. Using the wrong fluid in a high-voltage cooling loop is a serious mistake — the whole point of a low-conductivity coolant is that if it ever contacts a live component, it does not become a conductor.
A proper service includes:
- Inspection of each cooling loop — battery, power electronics, drive unit, and where equipped, the heat pump circuit
- Verification of coolant level in the correct reservoirs (there are more than one)
- Assessment of fluid condition, not just quantity
- Pressure-testing the system for slow leaks that would not show as a puddle
- Confirmation of the correct OEM specification before any top-off or exchange

Signs worth a phone call, not a Google search
Electrified Genesis models are undemonstrative when something is off. They will not stumble or overheat dramatically. Instead, watch for smaller signals:
- DC fast-charging that used to hit its peak rate and now tapers earlier than it did a year ago in similar weather
- A noticeable range drop in cold or hot weather that does not match your driving pattern
- An amber warning related to battery or hybrid system temperature
- Cabin heat that takes longer than usual to arrive on cold mornings, particularly in a heat-pump-equipped model
- Any visible coolant residue near the front of the car, which on an EV often indicates a low-pressure hose or fitting rather than a dramatic leak
None of these are emergencies in the traditional sense. All of them are worth a conversation. The rule of thumb: if the car is behaving differently than it did a season ago in similar conditions, tell us. Thermal issues caught early are inexpensive. Thermal issues ignored become battery issues, and battery issues are not.
What about hybrid and combustion Genesis models?
Most of the Genesis lineup — the G80, GV80, G70, and G90 — uses a conventional cooling system with the pink long-life coolant Hyundai Motor Group specifies. The intervals are longer than many owners expect, and the fluid is designed to be left alone until its service point. Do not shorten the interval on advice from a quick-lube shop; do not lengthen it on advice from the internet. The manual is correct.
Where it gets nuanced is the transmission cooler, the turbocharger cooling circuit on the 3.5T engines, and, on all-wheel-drive models, the transfer case. These are not coolant items exactly, but they are thermal items, and they benefit from the same kind of inspection during a coolant service.
