The GV90, Considered: Genesis Reveals Its Flagship Electric SUV

Genesis revealed the GV90 on August 19 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It is the brand's first full-size flagship electric SUV, and it sits at the top of the portfolio, above the GV60, GV70 and GV80. What follows is what was actually shown, what the company has confirmed, and — just as usefully — what it has not.

What was revealed, and where it sits

The GV90 is positioned as a halo vehicle: the car a brand builds to demonstrate what it is capable of when nothing is held back. Genesis describes it as its highest expression of design, technology, safety, and what the company calls elevated hospitality.

Two versions were shown. The GV90 Neolun, with the Neolun Arch Gate, and a GV90 with conventional swing doors. Above both sits the GV90 Neolun First Edition, an ultra-exclusive limited release with two-tone exterior combinations, wool cashmere garnishes and a four-seat configuration. United States availability of that First Edition has not been determined.

The Neolun Arch Gate

The headline is a door, which is not a sentence one writes often.

The Neolun Arch Gate is the world's first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach door system. With the pillar concealed, the front and rear doors open in unison facing one another, and a dual-motion hinge lets the rear door operate without interfering with the front. The result is an unusually open aperture and a genuinely different experience of getting into a car — which is the point, since Genesis frames entry and exit as a hospitality moment rather than a mechanical one.

The Neolun also brings motorized swiveling front seats, exclusive 24-inch forged alloy wheels and a power second-row console.

The numbers, for those who want them

The GV90 is built on Hyundai Motor Group's new eM architecture, with a 123.5 kWh high-voltage battery and front and rear motors producing a combined 490 kW — 657 horsepower — and 800 Nm of torque, or 590 lb-ft. Based on the company's internal testing, the battery charges from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 22 minutes on a 350 kW fast charger.

Multi-chamber air suspension is joined by an available dual electronic limited-slip differential and rear-wheel steering. Safety is where the specification turns unusual: an ultra-rigid body structure making extensive use of aluminum and ultra-high-strength steel, and twelve airbags — among them what Genesis says is the world's first Roof Airbag, alongside extended curtain airbags for the third row, seat cushion airbags and dual-depth passenger airbags.

A moon jar, and the argument for reduction

The exterior takes its cue from Korea's traditional moon jar pottery: restrained proportions, clean surfaces, sculptural simplicity. Design highlights include the Wing face Micro Lens Array headlamps, 22 and 24-inch forged alloy wheels, and a choice of ten exterior colors.

Luc Donckerwolke, President and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group, put the thinking plainly at the reveal: the GV90, he said, is the embodiment of Genesis' belief that true luxury is revealed not through addition, but through reduction.

Inside, that reduction is expensive rather than sparse — natural wood, wool cashmere and premium leather, Ambient Glow mood lighting, massage seats, radiant heat warmers and class-leading acoustic glass. The First Edition adds a refrigerator, integrated tables and a heated second-row real wood veneer floor drawn from ondol, the traditional Korean underfloor heating system.

What is not settled yet

This is the part worth being straight about, because a reveal is not a launch.

Production is currently expected to begin in December 2026, with retail sales anticipated in early 2027. Pricing will not be announced until closer to that start of sales. The ordering and allocation process has not been released either; retailers are told to expect that information next year. All Genesis EV Certified Retailers will be eligible to sell and service the GV90.

Anyone quoting you a GV90 price or a build slot today is guessing.
