On the Head-Up Display, and Where the Eye Wants Information

There is a kind of luxury that announces itself, and another kind that quietly removes an inconvenience so thoroughly you forget the inconvenience was ever there. The head-up display belongs firmly to the second category. Almost nobody shops for one. Almost everybody misses it the first time they drive something without it.

The case against looking down

An instrument cluster, however beautifully drawn, asks for a small compromise every time you consult it. Your eyes leave the road, travel down and inward, refocus from something near infinity to something about three feet away, collect a two-digit number, and then make the whole trip in reverse. Call it a second, generously. At seventy miles an hour, that second covers a hundred feet of highway you did not watch.

The head-up display collapses the trip. The image is projected onto the windshield but focused out past the front of the car, so the eye barely has to change its focus at all. You are not looking at the glass. You are looking through it, at information that happens to be sitting in the same plane as the road.

Calibrating it to yourself, once

The most common complaint about a head-up display is that it sits in the wrong place, and the most common cause is that nobody adjusted it after the car left the lot.

Set your seat first. Height, distance, backrest, the whole arrangement you actually drive in rather than the one you assume you drive in. Only then open the head-up display settings and adjust the vertical position until the readout sits low in your field of view, just above the hood line, where you can register it without lifting your gaze off the lane. Rotation squares the image to your eye. Brightness is worth setting on a bright afternoon rather than in a dark service bay, because it is far easier to notice a display that is too dim in daylight than one that is too bright at night.

It is a two-minute exercise, and it is the difference between a feature you use and one you eventually switch off.

What it chooses to show, and what it leaves out

The restraint is the point. Speed sits front and center. The posted limit sits near it, which is quietly useful on roads where the number changes more often than you would expect. Navigation contributes a turn arrow and a distance, not a map. The driver assistance systems report their status, and a blind-spot warning will appear where you are already looking rather than off in a mirror.

What is absent matters just as much. No media artwork, no notifications, no ornament. The display is edited, and the editing is the luxury.

The sunglasses problem, honestly

If you wear polarized sunglasses, the display may dim dramatically or disappear entirely depending on how you tilt your head. This surprises people, and it occasionally gets reported as a fault.

It is not one. A head-up display works by bouncing polarized light off the windshield, and a polarized lens is designed to reject light at a particular orientation. The two are working exactly as intended and simply cancelling each other out.

There is no setting that fixes this. Owners who rely on the display tend to keep a non-polarized pair in the car for driving and save the polarized ones for the lake.

On knowing your own car

A head-up display is a small thing that becomes a large thing once it is set up for the person actually driving. Most of the vehicles we see have never had it adjusted at all.
