The Genesis G70 Just Won Best Smart Luxury Vehicle — And It’s Just the Beginning of a Bigger Story

Two days ago, CarGurus announced the winners of its inaugural Confidence Awards — a new program designed to give buyers a clear-eyed, data-driven look at which vehicles actually deliver on their promises. The Best Smart Luxury Vehicle? Not a BMW. Not a Mercedes. Not an Audi.
The 2026 Genesis G70.

If that surprises you, you haven’t been paying attention. Genesis has been quietly stacking awards, expanding its lineup, and reshaping what “luxury” means for American buyers — and 2026 is the year all of that work has started showing up at the trophy table.

Here at Genesis of Norman, we’ve watched this brand transform from “the new kid” to a serious threat to the German establishment. Let’s talk about why the G70 won, and why what’s happening at Genesis right now is one of the most interesting stories in the luxury market.

Why the G70 won — and why it matters
CarGurus’ Confidence Awards aren’t lifestyle puff pieces. The methodology is rigorous: real inventory data, real pricing data, objective scoring across performance, efficiency, safety, technology, and cost of ownership, paired with editorial expertise. They were built to cut through marketing noise and tell shoppers what’s actually worth their money.
The G70 won the Best Smart Luxury Vehicle category because it does something most luxury sport sedans don’t: it delivers genuine intelligence at a genuine value.

“There’s nothing on the road today that’s better at proving luxury can be both rational and indulgent than the Genesis G70. Regardless of which engine, drivetrain, and price point you pick, this sport sedan comes standard with endless satisfaction.”— David Undercoffler, Head of Consumer Insights, CarGurus
Standard equipment on every G70 includes premium navigation with a 10.25-inch HD display, USB-C charging, touch climate controls, a frameless rearview mirror, and a full suite of driver-assistance technology. The kind of features German rivals charge thousands extra to add — Genesis ships them in the box.

Pair that with athletic chassis tuning, available all-wheel drive, and a proper sport sedan personality, and you get a car that punches well above its sticker price.
The bigger picture: Genesis is having a moment

The G70 win isn’t a one-off. It’s part of a remarkable run for the brand:

The Genesis GV60 was just named Best Compact Electric SUV by U.S. News & World Report in their 2026 Best Hybrid and Electric Car Awards — the brand’s first win in that category. The 2026 GV60 features an upgraded 84-kWh long-range battery, 800-volt architecture, an EPA-estimated range of up to 306 miles, and a 27-inch OLED instrument cluster that has to be seen in person to believe.
Genesis crossed one million cumulative global sales faster than any luxury brand in history. President and CEO José Muñoz announced this milestone at the New York Auto Show, where Genesis also unveiled its plan to launch 22 new or significantly enhanced models in North America between 2026 and 2030. That’s nearly tripling the current eight-model lineup.

Genesis is going racing. A bright orange Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar will compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June — one of the most prestigious motorsport events in the world. Three-time Le Mans winner André Lotterer, who’s testing the car, has publicly compared its initial feel favorably to the Porsche 963 he raced. That’s serious validation.
The Magma performance sub-brand is here. The first showroom-ready Magma vehicle, the GV60 Magma, is launching this summer — a high-performance EV that brings track-bred attitude to the GV60 platform. More Magma variants are coming.

Hybrids are coming. Genesis is officially expanding beyond its current gas-and-EV strategy. The GV80 hybrid arrives in the second half of this year, with the G80 and GV70 hybrids following close behind. Genesis is also developing a rear-wheel-drive luxury hybrid system specifically to compete with BMW and Mercedes — and an extended-range EV based on the GV70 that uses the gas engine purely as a generator.
The flagship GV90 SUV is expected to arrive stateside in late 2026, becoming the new top of the Genesis SUV lineup.
In other words: if you thought Genesis was a finished story, you’re about to watch a second act that’s bigger than the first.

What this means for Norman shoppers
Here’s the thing about being in Norman, Oklahoma: we don’t have to play by Dallas or Houston rules. Our customers tend to value substance over showroom theater, and that’s exactly where Genesis lives.

Consider what’s on our lot right now:
The award-winning G70 starts in the upper $40,000s — meaningfully less than a comparably equipped BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class — and outperforms both on standard features.

The G80 delivers a full-size luxury sedan experience with more rear legroom and better standard tech than its German competitors at a price that lets you actually use the car instead of worrying about it.
The GV70 and GV80 SUVs consistently land at the top of luxury SUV comparison tests, with the GV70 in particular winning hearts with its blend of driving feel and interior craftsmanship.
The G90 Prestige Black is a six-figure executive sedan with massaging seats, an air suspension, push-button-close doors, and a 409-horsepower twin-turbo V6 with electric supercharger. Reviewers have called it “a modern return to old-school executive-sedan values.” If you’re cross-shopping a Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series, you owe yourself a test drive.

The all-electric GV60 — fresh off its U.S. News award — gives you genuine luxury EV credibility with the unique Crystal Sphere shifter that rotates to reveal itself when you start the car. Yes, it’s a gimmick. Yes, it’s also delightful.
The Genesis advantage you might not know about
A few things that separate Genesis from the rest of the luxury field — things that matter especially in Oklahoma:
Genesis Service Valet. For most service appointments during your warranty period, Genesis comes to you, picks up your car, leaves you a loaner Genesis, and returns your serviced vehicle. You don’t sit in a service waiting room. You barely interrupt your day.

Industry-leading warranty coverage. Genesis offers a 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty — significantly longer than most luxury competitors.
Complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles. Most German brands either don’t offer this or charge extra for it.
Made in Alabama. Several Genesis models are built at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant, which means current U.S. tariff dynamics tilt in Genesis’s favor versus European imports.

The takeaway
Genesis isn’t trying to be Mercedes. It isn’t trying to be BMW. It’s building its own definition of luxury — one rooted in restraint, generosity of standard equipment, thoughtful service, and increasingly daring design and performance ambitions.
Two days ago, CarGurus told the world the G70 is the smartest luxury buy on the road. Three weeks ago, U.S. News told the world the GV60 is the best compact electric luxury SUV. Next month, the world will watch a Genesis hypercar compete at Le Mans. And over the next four years, 22 new models are going to redefine what this brand can be.
You can be ahead of that story or behind it. We’d suggest ahead.
